Welcome to the magical world of dollhouse miniatures—a hobby where big dreams live in tiny spaces. If you've ever looked at a miniature scene and thought, “Wow, I wish I could do that,”—this post is for you. Whether you’re here for nostalgia, relaxation, storytelling, or artistic exploration, the miniature world is absolutely a place you belong. No prior experience needed—just a dash of curiosity and a willingness to try. Let’s take the first small (but mighty!) steps together.

3D printing is changing the Dollhouse Miniature Industry and at a fast rate! Need proof? Head over to Instagram and almost all mini creators are showing off their newly printed 3D miniatures! It’s so cool to see what everyone is making!

There are several reasons why 3D Printing for Dollhouse Miniatures is so popular. First is that its so affordable! One can purchase a 3D printer for as low as $200. Another reason its so popular, is you can make just about anything for your dollhouse! The possibilites are endless!

With these pros, also comes a few cons. My biggest challenge was the huge learning curve. First you have to pick the right printer for you. (more on that below). Then after getting your printer set up, my challenge was to get my first print to stick to the build plate! I did find that it was actually the envirnoment in my studio, which was too cold for the printer to properly work. I never would have thought that was the problem!

My next challenge was learning a 3D platform for creating the 3D models to print. I recommend starting with TinkerCad, or just purchase them! Also, there are a lot of free STL files out there, you just have to do a little searching.

BUT with all that said…. 3D printing is totally worth it! It’s so rewarding to say "I just made that!" and like I said… you can make just about anything you need for your dollhouse! It’s pretty amazing.

To help you further your knowledge of 3D printing, listen to the latest podcast episode I created with Jim from The Edge Of Tech. He is one of the smartest guys I know when it come to all things Techy! Jim knows so much about 3D printing and If you are just getting started or have been printing for awhile, you are going to learn something. Promise!

3D Printing Tips:

•Photoshop 3D files can be put directly into your slicer (I use Lychee)

•Tinkercad is a free, easy-to-use app for 3D designing

•Types of printers: FDM (prints using PLA filament) and SLA (uses resin). Both are very affordable and fairly small.

•Worried about toxic fumes with SLA? Anycubic came out with plant-based resin

•Remember, you don't need a very large build plate for dollhouse miniatures!

Like trains, dollhouses come in a wide range of standard sizes. If you are new to Dollhouse Miniatures it can be difficult to choose which size you should collect or create. I will break down the different scales and show you how can you check the size of the furniture and minaiture findings that are perfect for your collection.

Standardized sizes for modern dollhouses include 1:6, 1:12, 1:24, and 1:48. You will also find that some antique houses are often a custom size. Some scales are popular for collectors of artisan miniatures, while others are more useful for children. Before investing in a dollhouse, you should understand the various scales available and determine which scale is best for your collection and crafting skills.

This is the scale for most Japanese 'Re-Ment' accessories and play foods.

Often called 1-inch scale, this is the most popular scale. Maybe its for its easy conversion; 1 foot = 1 inch. So, 12 ft in real life, the scaled version would be 12 inches. It could also be a popular choose amongst collectors and artisans as this is the scale of Queen Mary's epic 1924 dollhouse. This scale is readily available and easy to work with, however it can be more expensive than other scales.

Maybe its because avid collectors and makers are starting to run out of space and this scales takes up less space! Unfortunately, this scale is still limited compared to 1:12 scale. This scale is also fairly popular for high-end die-cast car collectibles, as street scenes are much easier to construct in 1:24 vs 1:12 scale.

Its much harder to find than 1:12 scale and 1:24 scale and its much harder to work with than other larger scales. A magnifying glass is usually needed. Details are usually lost in this scale due to the size.

BEST GLUES FOR DOLLHOUSE MINIATURES

Can you really create Dollhouse Miniatures without using glue? Why are there so many different kinds of glue on the market? Who do you know which glue to use and with what materials?
I have to admit, I'm a glue bottle collector; buying the newest glues that hit the shelves to see if it will work better and maybe faster (as we all know this is the WORST part of being a miniaturist- waiting for the glue to dry!) Here are some guidelines to my findings on what the best glues are for creating Dollhouse Miniatures.

GETTING STARTED
The first thing to know is what will you be using? That will help determine which adhesive to try first, as some glues have special formulations for different materials. Looking at the glue labels will help with this (or the chart I created for you below.
The second thing to consider is the strength needed for the miniature pieces. This is extremely important when gluing together larger 'real scale' items but its still important to consider with your miniature pieces as well. For example, a super glue has very poor strength, but it’s great for those pieces where a clamp can't be used to hold it in place.
Another important thing to consider is the thickness of the glue when applies. For example, Tacky Glue is very popular in the miniature world, but in my option it’s to thick when assembling furniture or when a thin strip of adhesive is needed. However, using too thin of a glue to attach wood to wood is also not a good idea as it will seep into the grains and not the joints where you want it.
The color (also shiny or matte) of the glue when it dries is also important to think about. Lastly, but probably the most important is how long will the glue hold up. We want our creations to last through generations so choosing a glue that will hold up for years is important.

POLYURETHANE
This is one of the newest type of glues to hit the market. Maybe you have heard of one of the most popular ones, Gorilla Glue, but there are several on the market. In my opinion, I stay clear of these when making miniatures. They are great for strength but they tend to expand when setting. Another issue I have come across is that I can't use the bottle quick enough and it dries out while sitting on the shelf. This is because air initiates the drying process. However, if you want to give it a try, I recommend squeezing all the air out of the bottle before closing it properly shut.

EPOXY
Typically used for water scenes and dollhouse miniature food, this product can also be used as an adhesive. Please note that not all epoxies are formulated as adhesives. If you want to use this as a glue, look for the two-part expoxies. The benefit is its non-shrinking and strong, however, watch closely to the set times as some can take up to 24-hours. This product will also handy when bonding metal to wood for this strength and the joints can be sanded if needed.

SUPER GLUE
You aren't a miniaturist until you super glued your fingers together, right!? We all love super glue for the instant hold you have when gluing two pieces together. A couple things to consider before picking up this product; they can have a strong odor, leave behind a white residue when set and sometimes the strength just isn't there. Quick Tip- if your joints just aren't sticking together after the super glue is applied, simply add a little baking soda to the joint and that should solve your issue.

POLYVINYL GLUE
Also known as: white glue, carpenter's glue, wood glue, PVA and these are just to name a few. There are many many brands of this type of glue, but not all are the same. Each glue will vary in thickness, color and set time. My personal glue for dollhouse miniature making is Elmer's Glue-All, WellBond and Titebond.

What glue are you going to try? Still have questions? Here is a chart to help you decide which glue is right for your project.

Once you start you'll wonder why you didn't start sooner. Remember, you will make mistakes. That's ok. Just start and have fun! To make it a little easier for you, I'd like to share with you 5 Resin Tips that I wish I would have known starting out.

TIP 1:

CuringResin Takes a Long Time to Cure! With that said, pick a spot that the resin can sit for a long period of time. Working on cookie sheets is a good idea if room is an issue for you. The sheets can easily be moved but remember to set on a level surface or your Dollhouse Miniature creations won't be straight. Also, know that temperature is very important when working with resin. Too hot and it will cure too fast. Too cold and it won't cure at all and could be sticky. 70-73 degrees is the perfect temperature for your Miniature Resin Creations to cure.

TIP 2:

It's important to measure the resin EXACTLY as instructed on the packaging! If more of less harder is used your Dollhouse Miniature creations would turn out sticky or not dry at all. Also, know that not all Resin is the same. Pick the Resin that best suits your project. Need a fast drying resin? Try this UV resin. It cures quickly in the sun or in UV light. I love this resin the best! Its a jewelry grade resin and cures super clear.

TIP 3:

Your worst enemy when working with Resin for your Miniatures will be bubbles! Always remember to mix slowly and wait at least 5 mintues before pouring. Setting the resin bottles in bowls of warm water before measuring also helps. PRO TIP: use a lighter and torch the bubbles after the 5 minutes is up. Please take caution when doing this and its not recommended for children to do this with adult surpervision.

TIP 4:

DirtDust, Lint and Dirt as also your worst enemy when working with Resin for your Dollhouse Miniature Creations! Make sure to clean your area as well as any molds that you may be using. I like to use duct tape to ensure all hair, lint and dust is removed before pouring.

TIP 5:

LayeringWaiting for resin to dry is worse than waiting for paint to dry! Layering your resin can give you really cool effects! Especially when making fancy Miniature cocktails. Make sure to wait AT LEAST 4-5 hours between each pour or your resin will mix together. TRUST ME... I know!

Many collectors can probably find several set in Grandma’s Cupboard or even their own kitchen. There are tons of different designs and colors of various rarity for collectors to choose from.

What is Pyrex?

Pyrex glassware was introduced to the public in 1915 by the Corning Glass Works. There are 3 basic types of collectible Pyrex: Clear Pyrex Ovenware (1915), Pyrex Flameware (1936) and Pyrex Colors (1947). Most people are familiar with the Colored Pyrexware because there is a considerable amount of it still being used in households. There is a good chance that any antique store or flea market you visit will have a number of Pyrex items for sale.Early in the 20th century, Pyrex had developed a heat-resistant glass they called “Nonex,” which they utilized first for battery jars and later railroad lanterns. One of their physicists brought home a sawed-off battery jar bottom to his wife, Bessie as she had complained about a ceramic casserole dish shattering in her oven after only two uses. Turns out, the borosilicate glass used to make the battery jar was heat resistant and stood up to sudden heat changes. The rest, as they say, is history.

During the thirty years or so that Corning produced patterned Pyrex (starting in 1956), over 150 silk screen designs were produced! That makes for quite a lot of variations that collectors can treasure-hunt for. Do you collect by the color of the body? Or do you search for a specific pattern? I think its fasinating to search by the era. Either way... Pyrex is fun to collect! I find myself drawn to the mustard pieces, like Butterfly Gold! Maybe because it reminds me of a 1970’s color.
